Coping with student life while looking after your mental health while studying can be really challenging. Having daily assignments, the stress of exams, a part-time job, and sometimes money worries can be stressful. It is very difficult to maintain good mental wellbeing throughout studies and in a midst of a pandemic. Students need all the support they can get. It can be hard to know where to begin when it comes to self-care.

#1 SHARE When you are feeling down it is easy to isolate yourself. Talking about your feelings with your friends, family, and teachers can boost positive feelings. Try to stay connected and focus on the quality of your relationships, not the quantity. If someone makes you feel, happy, appreciated, valued, just keep the connection going.
#2 EXERCISE Regular exercise can reduce stress and boost your self-esteem. It also improves concentration and sleep. Individual exercise or at the gym, it is a great way to make new friends too.
#3 SLEEP WELL Sleep is essential for physical and mental health. It improves memory and concentration. The NHS (National Health Service) recommends between 6 and 9 hours of sleep every night.
#4 EAT HEALTHILY Good nutrition is about eating a healthy and balanced diet. It is essential for the body’s metabolism and your mental to function properly.
#5 BALANCE YOUR STUDIES WITH OTHER ACTIVITIES You need from time to time a break from your study. Find a passion and a hobby that allow you to find life outside of the daily routine.
#6 SWITCH OFF YOUR PHONE Turn off your phone and social media for a couple of hours a day and focus on yourself, your thoughts, and your well-being. Go for a walk and enjoy a breath of fresh air.
#7 SELF-KINDNESS Be nice to yourself. Don’t be too critical of yourself. Start your day with positive affirmations and tell yourself the following: “I am enough”, “ deserve to be happy”, “ I am beautiful”, “I am worthy”. This can help you pick yourself up if things go wrong and help you cope better.
#8 BE SUPPORTIVE Helping others can help you feel better about yourself. If someone is feeling down around you, ask yourself what you can do to be supportive. Even something as little as a smile or a kind word can brighten up someone’s else day.

#9 ACCEPT WHO YOU ARE Don’t compare yourself to others. You are unique, each person is on a different journey and following their own path.

#10 SEEK HELP WHEN YOU NEED IT Getting help is a sign of strength, not a weakness. This can be a friend or a family member, but it can be as well reaching out to a counsellor, a GP, or a mental health professional.
